Qorivva Becomes Automotive MCU Certified to ISO 26262 Functional Safety Standard

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) is working to help automotive electronics suppliers more easily develop functional safety systems that meet the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26262 standards. Freescale has announced that its Qorivva MPC5643L 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) has been certified by an independent and authoritative certification body exida, becoming the industry’s first semiconductor product to receive this certification.

Based on Power Architecture® technology, the Qorivva MPC5643L 32-bit MCU is designed for a wide range of automotive applications requiring a high level of automotive safety integrity, including electric power steering, active suspension, anti-lock braking systems and advanced radar-based driving Assistant System (ADAS). It complies with all automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL) and meets and meets the most stringent ASIL D.

The MPC5643L MCU is part of the Freescale SafeAssure program. The program offers a wide range of MCU, sensor, and analog IC solutions, and provides support for functional safety application design, including training, security documentation, and technical support.

Ray Cornyn, vice president of Freescale Automotive's MCU Division, said: "Freescale has been successfully cultivating an innovative MCU for the automotive market very early and has extensive experience. Our SafeAssure program simplifies the process, enabling automotive and industrial OEMs. Manufacturers reduce the time required for the system to meet functional safety standards. Qorivva MCUs have once again demonstrated through our exida certification that we have fulfilled our promise to make it easier for customers to develop functional safety electronic systems."

According to the ISO standard, functional safety means that there is no unreasonable risk due to an electrical/electronic system failure. ISO 26262 covers the entire automotive system life cycle and consists of 10 parts, including terms related to hardware, software, integration, development, and production processes. Since the MPC5643L MCU is only an integral part of the automotive system, exida has detailed the scope of all ISO 26262 terms that are considered suitable for the MCU. The MPC5643L successfully passed the evaluation and certification of the MCU part of the ISO 26262 standard.

The results of the ISO26262 functional safety assessment given by exida can be found in the 1108-067-C R009 report.

According to Rainer Faller, chief partner of exida, “Freescale MPC5643L is the first controller to issue a formal ISO 26262 ASIL D-level functional safety certificate by an independent third-party authoritative certification body. We are based on all relevant micro-controls in ISO 26262. The requirements for the part and the definition of the work product have been evaluated for the product's design, application development and production process, and this certificate was awarded. Freescale's product is excellent."

The Qorivva MPC5643L MCU joins Freescale's Product longevity program, and the product is available for 15 years from the date of release.
